Chevrolet Sparks sweet and tasty colours

Chevrolet Spark Color Inspiration

As if the Chevrolet Spark in Jalapeno Green and Salsa Red weren’t enough to inspire a store run for taco chips, the minicar is tickling the taste buds for the 2016 model with two more foodie-inspired exterior colors – Toasted Marshmallow and Kalamata Olive.

“The first generation Spark’s colors allowed us to explore some fun, creative names,” said Dora Nowicki, marketing manager for the 2016 Spark. “We had an opportunity to continue this trend with the new Spark. When it came time to name new colors for the 2016 model, we brought color samples to the table and challenged our launch team to let their creativity run wild.”

The all-new Morgan Aero 8 draws its design inspiration from the popular British roadsters from the 1960s.

Everything Is Awesome!

Volvo XC90 crash test

Volvo Cars’ safety expert Anders Axelson knows that brilliant ideas can pop up in the strangest of circumstances.

A visit to Legoland with his twin daughters in 2007 inspired Anders to turn an amusement park ride into an efficient test method in Volvo Cars’ quest for better protection in run-off road crashes.

“Watching people being thrown in all directions during a ride in the ‘Robocoaster’, I suddenly realised that those rapid, random movements resembled the violent forces occupants in a run-off road crash are exposed to,” says Anders Axelson.

“The industrial robot manufacturer ABB had the technology and the knowledge to programme a machine designed for precision work to move a car seat around in a seemingly random pattern. It worked brilliantly,” says Anders Axelson.

A vehicle seat and restraint system is mounted on the multi-axial industrial robot. The robot, which is used together with a crash test dummy, can be programmed to simulate the occupant kinematics during crucial parts of run-off road scenarios.

Auch auf der gegenüberliegenden B-Säule ist der QR-Code zu fin

What a boring photograph – such an unusual selection for picture of the week.

Look a little closer because that QR code on the B pillar could be a lifesaver.

When a crash occurs and the vehicle is seriously damaged, the priority for the rescue services is to free the occupants. This can be extremely dangerous for both occupants and first responders since the vehicle is equipped with many potentially hazardous components such as high voltage wiring, fuel lines as well as airbags and SRS pyrotechnics, all of which can be compromised depending on the severity of the impact.

While Mercedes-Benz information has been available to rescue teams for decades, it was traditionally provided in a printed format or downloadable as a pdf document. Today, it can be accessed by scanning a QR code with a smartphone, providing immediate access to a detailed rescue card which contains all of the structural details specific to a vehicle model, such as the location of airbags, battery, high strength steel (HSLA) and fuel tank.

As part of its awareness campaign, Mercedes-Benz Canada has captured Kelowna’s Fire Hall No. 1 firefighters’ thoughts on Rescue Assist.

Nissan creates “world’s cleanest car” – a zero emissions

What do you get when you combine the world’s best-selling zero emission vehicle with innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt?

Answer: a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle that might just be the “world’s cleanest car.”

Created to demonstrate its potential use in future production vehicles, this LEAF’s exterior was treated with a specially engineered paint that is designed to repel water and oils.

The “self-cleaning” paint, called Ultra-Ever Dry, creates a protective layer of air between the paint and environment, effectively stopping standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the LEAF’s surface.

Photo credit should read: Matt Alexander/PA Wire

French Open winner Maria Sharapova was driven to the glamorous Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Pre-Wimbledon Party in the Porsche 918 Spyder – the Stuttgart marque’s fastest, most powerful production car to date, and one of the lowest-emitters of CO2 of any class of car.

Fresh from his drive in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, Sharapova’s chauffeur for the night was Porsche factory ‘works’ driver, Mark Webber, complete in smart chauffeur attire.

The 918 Spyder has a mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8 race engine coupled to two electric motors with lithium-ion batteries. It is a remarkable plug-in hybrid super sports car that can reach a top speed of 344 km/h, sprint from zero to 100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and yet at 72 g/km (70 g/km with the lightweight Weissach Package) produces so little CO2 that it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

It has a total power output of 887 hp and holds the current lap record for a production car at the famous Nürburgring race circuit of just 6 minutes 57 seconds. Despite all that performance, its plug-in hybrid technology means a low fuel consumption of 3.0 L/100kms is possible.

XL-ent fuel consumption

VW XL1

The world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid car, the Volkswagen XL1, will go on display in in London alongside other Designs of the Year award nominees.

A team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for VW, designed the Volkswagen XL1. It is a limited series production two-seater car that explores the limits of energy efficiency for a road-legal production vehicle.

The design brief for the XL1 was to produce a ‘one litre’ car – that is to say, a car that uses one litre of fuel per 100 km. The resulting vehicle uses just 0.9 litres per 100 km.

To achieve this fuel consumption figure, the XL1 was aerodynamically optimised, adopting the classic ‘tear drop’ shape and utilising innovations such as removing traditional wing mirrors and replacing them with small cameras called e-Mirrors which transmit exterior images to interior displays.

For more details on the XL1, visit www.volkswagen.co.uk.

The brief, drawn up by Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Rüsselheim, Germany, called for the 16 students on the Transportation Design masters’ course at IED to draw and design the car of their dreams. The car should be one they would want to buy and drive, targeting Generation Y –consumers born between the 1980s and the early years of this millennium, who have grown up with computers and are used to being connected at all times.

The result is a dramatic, compact and ultra-lightweight sports car concept called PassoCorto – Italian for ‘short wheelbase’. The compact two-seater weighs just 840 kg thanks to its carbon fibre chassis and is powered by a rear-mid mounted four-cylinder in-line 1,6-litre bi-turbo engine.

KM Astra Extreme

The Astra VXR EXTREME will be the most powerful front-wheel drive car produced by Vauxhall, General Motors’ UK subsidiary.

The first public sighting sight of the coupe with the 300-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged engine under the hood was made at the Geneva Auto Show this week. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential.

The Vauxhall/Opel Astra models were available here under the Saturn sub-brand but with its demise so went the Astra. The likelihood of it being rebadged under another GM brand here is not likely but it’s okay to dream.

The Driveway crew is in Switzerland and will report on the show next week.

Futuristic Kia with butterfly wings…

KIA Niro concept

The Kia Niro concept is a futuristic, upscale and performance-inspired hybrid electric drive car designed for urban dwellers.

Entry into the vehicle is by way of dihedral “butterfly” doors with flush door handles that swing up high into the roof. Mounted directly onto the side windows are milled “Plexiglas 1” door mirrors with built-in cameras. And at the rear, the large hatch opens to reveal an expansive carbon-fibre-clad cargo deck ready to swallow large quantities of equipment, gadgets, gear or luggage.

This concept comes with a variant of Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-liter ‘Gamma’ engine, capable of 160 horsepower. The engine and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission serve the front wheels while an electric hybrid system powered by regenerative braking delivers up to 45 horsepower to the rear wheels – when road conditions require extra grip.

Autoshow poster

Arty take on the Vancouver International Auto Show

This year’s winner of the Vancouver International Auto Show poster contest breaks new ground using abstract imagery in its design.

Vancouver’s Trish Jodoin designed the 2014 poster and explained the concept: “I wanted to present a poster that would reflect both the Vancouver setting and the excitement of cars themselves

“Rather than choose the usual downtown skyline shot for Vancouver, I think the blurred background evokes a rainy city street at night, which is a wonderfully typical Vancouver sight. The slightly abstract lights in the front suggest two vehicles passing each other. I also think these lines subtly echo the graphic in the Vancouver Auto Show’s logo.”

Jodoin received $1,200 for her winning design.

The Vancouver International Auto Show takes place March 25-30, 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

MINI Photo of the Week

The MINI Paceman Snow Beast is a wild thing.

MINI ascends to dizzy heights once again to present another member of the MINI family in an original creative guise in the Swiss snow sport resort of Laax.

At last year’s Burton Global Series (BEGS), the PirateArtCrew snowboard artists unveiled an art installation featuring the MINI Countryman. This year Urban Art Illustrator Andreas Preis takes up the challenge to work his magic on a MINI Paceman.

Preis is known for his striking designs as displayed, for example, on skateboards and snowboards. Using his expressive illustrative skills, the artist has taken the MINI Paceman and turned it into a wild MINI Paceman SNOW BEAST in time for the start of the competitive event next week.

It’s larger than a big Bentley Mulsanne. It rides on 20-inch chrome wheels huge 44-inch (111 cms) tires.

The Los Angeles-based manufacturer says the car was “conceptualized for those individuals who dare to be different than the ordinary.”

Bentley Home Collecton - Four-Seater Sofa

Yes, yes, you are wondering what a picture four-seat sofa is doing in Driveway.

Well, it is a Bentley, after all.

The new Bentley Home collection is inspired by the renowned craftsmanship and exquisite materials that characterise the interiors of all Bentley models.

The bodies of the new Richmond pieces are created with an embracing double shell that can be covered in either leather or a fine veneer of burr walnut. The same wide selection of veneers, which is available for Bentley car customers, is also available for most pieces in the collection. The wood is then carefully matched to a padded structure covered in a light cashmere

The colour palette is composed of varying neutral tones of ivory and taupe matched with shades of beige and cream. Intricate details such as the leather braid around the contours highlight the soft and sinuous lines.

The iconic quilted diamond pattern embossed in the leather interiors of a Bentley has also been interpreted into the unique designs of the furniture.

No prices announced yet.
